FurBQ Becomes Mud-BQ : Rained Out and Rescheduled
Sadly for the first time in 18 years, The Official SoCalFurs FurBQ was Rained Out. We had gotten to our designated Group area right at 6AM, Right where the major downpour had just started.
We scouted the area, and noted the amount of mud that was accumulating all around the table areas. Compared to last and other years where we had morning moisture, This was Far worse, as in the past it had been Moist, but not Wet.
The decision was made to talk with the Park Rangers about a Reschedule. Fortunately the Ranger we spoke to had known about who we were and has seen the Fursuits we normally present, and she agreed with us that those aren't really designed to be tromping around in the mud. She brought up the schedule of available dates, and they were mostly in August and September. Knowing how hot August tends to be, we chose September 17th.
In the meantime, for those still looking to spend a Saturday with a big group of furries (and for those who have pre-purchased food items for FurBQ), we do know of an event that sprung up in lieu of the FurBQ reschedule. Consider this an "unofficial" substitute picnic for furries, as this was not organized by us as any sort of backup plan (see FAQ below).
The Address for the Mile Square Park location currently is:
16801 Euclid St, Fountain Valley, CA 92708
Some furries were able to create some last minute signage in the attempts to direct you to the right area within Mile Square Park. However, please contact LostWolf321 (via Twitter) if you find yourself lost.
A Few FAQs to address:
"Why didn't you cancel the event the night before?"
In the past, when we were using the General Picnic Spots, we were free to do exactly that. Last year, sadly, We were flagged by the rangers as "Your group is too big to use the General Areas", and we were told that future events held by us would need to be held in the Large Group Areas: Areas which are Minimum $300 to reserve, which is what we did for this year. The Major Caveat is that We Cannot make a "Rainout" decision ourselves, it would have to be at the discretion of the Rangers. Fortunately, the Rangers sided with our request.
"Why not move the event completely over to the New Park?"
At this time we have absolutely No clout with Mile Square Park: We have No idea how the Park Owners are going to take to 120+ people with costumed critters suddenly invading their space. Had this been a prior arrangement where we spoke to the Mile Square Park rangers in advance, we would be more willing to call it an "Official" relocation. But until we get names of the Owners of the park and chat with them, we cannot have an "Official" presence there yet. We are currently monitoring the impromptu event today, and will be asking for peoples input to see how we will proceed.
In the case of Mile Square Park, we just discovered that this is also under the OC Parks’ regional park system, so that means our group size would still be “too big” for the General picnic sites and thus we likely would have to reserve in the same way we have done this year for Irvine Regional Park
Rescheduled for September 17th.
If you are already headed to the area, please check out the unofficial event at Mile Square Park:
@LostWolf321: @SoCal_Furs I here a group is looking into going to Mile Square Regional Park 16801 Euclid St, Fountain Valley, CA 92708
We suddenly realized this morning, that we made a horrible gaffe regarding our announcement of the poll's creation, done earlier in the month. When we initially put the poll up, we somehow missed announcing it to the SoCalFurs and SoCalFurs Events Yahoo groups, And this Livejournal community.
To remedy this, we have re-opened the poll, extending it to the 30th to give you a chance to have your say. http://www.socalfurs.com/socalfurs-cast-your-vote/
(There is no need to share this as the other networks have already voted)
Its recognized a lot of people on this group dont normally go to our website and may just use this discussion board as the only source that they need for finding out what is going on and forming conversations with others. So, with us not announcing it to you guys when the poll first opened, its created a significant difference in our voting numbers (~30-40 total votes for this poll so far.... vs the Spring event's typical vote count of 100+)
We sincerely apologize for this oversight and hope to see more votes.

After a night of Recuperation, Thought assimilation and reflection, I now present to you the Post-FurBQ Summary:
The Result: Mostly a success, even despite the afternoon rain!
Fursuiters in the Photoshoot with the Park Ranger: 21
What we had an Abundance of this year: Ice
What we ran out of this year: Hamburgers
Total Attendees at Maximum: 144
For the most part, despite the overcastness of most of the day, the FurBQ started Fantastically well and quite normal: By 7am, the spot was already claimed by Ironbadger and Leo was well on his way to cooking breakfast (Which Included Burgers) for the 8-10 furs whom had shown up to help pick up litter left by the previous users and to rearrange the tables.
At this time the conditions were quite typical even for FurBQs we've traditionally held in May: Overcast and slightly misty in the morning, but otherwise All Things were a Go!
Furs began arriving in larger groups: By 10am Parking Lot 10 was already completely full, and Lot 9 was 1/4 full. There was a full compliment of Snacks of all types on the Snack table, a Line of Drink Coolers near the Cutlery table, and the Grill was Hot and Heavy with cooking meats. Fursuits were bouncing around, RC Vehicles being played with, Four-leggers were interacting with people, Music was playing, Fun was being had by all!
This pace kept up through lunchtime: Corn was made, and Leo Tsubasa (The AM Cook) and I traded places at the Grill. The Park Rangers came by, and all the Fursuiters gathered to have their photographs taken with them! It was around 1 where the Max Attendance was counted.
It was right around 2 where we started getting hints of what was to come. With the Trees overhead and the ground staying Mostly dry, we continued cooking, and Furs continued to interact and mingle. Later on we started to notice the impending Sausage Fest, as the Meat Locker became low on Burger patties and Hamburger Buns were running out, yet hot Dogs, Frankfurters and Weiners were still in plentiful supply.
Right around 3 o'clock, the Last Hamburger Patty was served, and the Rains started up in earnest.
The descision was made to wrap up the FurBQ Early for the first time in FurBQs history. The call was made just as we noticed the Pavement was now completely wet. Furs started to help in cleaning up the tables and gathering up trash and their belongings. It caught us completely by surprised that this effort had happened almost automatically without any requests. Many consolidated their activities underneath the park trees or canopies. Compared to the rest of the Park, the FurBQ was still quite well attended: Jokes about the Rain abound, and people gave their shelter (Umbrellas or Canopies or Trees) to those whom were still in fursuit.
By about 4:30 there were about 3 big groups of furrs left under the canopies and in their tents, chatting away and hanging out, many of the furrs having gone on to make separate Dinner plans. By 5, most of the groups who had brought the Canopies had left, and those of us whom remained (Chythar, Zrath, Sahara, Hoof and Moka) made one last pass making sure that everything was cleaned up, and left the park.
There were 4 unclaimed Lost & Found things left in the park: 2 balls (one blue stripey ball, the other a Soccer ball), a Blue Backpack (which we already have placed/been contacted about), and a small Pewter Pendant (you may claim it by describing it to us).
While not an Overwhelming success like in previous years, it was still quite highly attended and everyone had fun Despite the rain. Timewise, it was only cut short by about 3 hours: Instead of ending at 6 as it normally does and having furrs lingering until 8, This year it ended at 3 and furrs lingered until 5.
For future FurBQ Planning, we will be Staying away from Any April Dates, as the phrase "April Showers Brings May Flowers" is Still Very relevant to our area. This concern was brought up during the initial polling of the FurBQ dates that was held at the end of February, but we decided to allow the voting public to decide the date as we had traditionally done in the past, except this time with two April dates as suggested by several furrs. We cast the poll, the voters made their descisions, we had our reservations, we figured "Why not give it a try". Try we did, lesson learned.
There have been a couple of folks asking for a Redo of the FurBQ: Given that the FurBQ Ran for 9 of its traditional 12 hours, there will be no Mulligan. One must understand that, unlike a Baseball Game which is funded by large Megacorporations which have Insurances against such rainouts, Our FurBQ Is a Community-Run Potluck event, meaning that there is no one "Sugar Daddy" funding the event: Asking for a Raincheck is basically Asking Everyone to buy the meats and take the weekend off All Over Again; something that most of us working-class citizens can ill-afford to do in such a short timeframe. For those interested in the Finances: there are 4 of us whom "Seed" the FurBQ every year, and that amounts to about $200 per person, meaning that to Start the FurBQ Again we would need to have Another $800, Meats being the Most expensive item on that list, followed by Charcoal.
Also against a Mulligan in the Summer is the Weather: Here in Southern California, asking for a FurBQ to be done during the summer is akin to throwing all the puppies in an Oven. Summer is Hot. We're in a Drought. The Park is FULL of other people also trying to escape the heat, and thus the Idea of a Summer FurBQ is a Big No.
Instead, be sure to look for a Fall event, which is indeed being Organized To happen this autumn at the same place. Date and Time will be set sometime in the future.
Should anyone feel the need to Want to do their own "Redo" and run their own event independent of SoCalFurs, by all means do: please feel free to organize the event, set a date, and the SoCalFurs Network will be happy to announce it for you.
Many thanks to all those who attended this year from all across the region! We would like to Especially thank all those whom contributed to the event and volunteered their time and/or monies to the event! Thanks to Rivercoon for his wonderful Mozzerella-filled Pizza Burgers, and to Raz for all the Fried Chicken!

That’s right, it’s time for the 16th annual SoCalFurs FurBQ! This event is all about the SoCalFurs community coming together for food, merriment and spending a chill day outdoors with friends –old and new. It’s One of the largest informal gatherings of furs in the Southern California region, and a great way to meet Southern California furs (and a few others who come to visit) from all over. This is a fursuit-friendly event, so by all means, bring your toughest fursuit feet out and come play!
Irvine Regional Park has a number of activities within. This includes a lake with paddleboats, the Irvine Park Railroad, the OC Zoo ($2/person) and even some hiking trails near to our picnic area. For additional info specific to Irvine Regional Park, feel free to view the park brochure. By phone, Irvine Regional Park can be reached at (714) 973-6835 or (714) 973-3173
How to Get to Our Picnic Area: When you get in, hang a right after paying at the gate. There should be some signs set up on the display boards along the road that point to our event. We will ‘steak’ our claim at the traditional spot, between Parking Lots 9 and 10 (Shown towards the bottom of the park map.as P9 & P10. )
Crowd The SoCalFurBQ is a potluck event. Over 100 furs attend throughout the day so we encourage everyone to consider bringing a food item to share with everyone else. Our picnic area has one large cooking grill, but we have no problem bringing an extra grill for placement in the barbecue area. We never seem to have problems with variety: Hamburgers and Hot Dogs are the traditional favorites but vegetarian items are always welcome! Others enjoy bringing sushi and other ethnic foods. If you want to wait until just before you get there to pick up food, the nearest supermarket is the Albertsons on Chapman & Jamboree.
ICE ICE, BABY! Yes, we don’t need enough ice to build an igloo come morning but we sure need to have ice supplied throughout the day. So, if you are coming to the FurBQ later on, it wont hurt to grab a bag of ice on the way in. The more this small act happens, the more we can guarantee that your food will remain cold.
Be sure to keep all private coolers out of the cooking area. Coolers of any kind in the cooking area will be appropriated for communal food storage.
If you are bringing meat for the grill, please notify our team of grillmasters as meat products will be stored together in a cooler separate from the others.
For the safety of those whom are allergic, Please: NO FISH PRODUCTS OR PRODUCT WITH PEANUTS! FurBQ staff will not allow any fish or seafood products to be placed on the communal grills.
Mayonnaise must be in single-serving packets. We understand how this may create more trash but we do not want jars of mayo at this event. Mayo in the jar tends to go bad very quickly (cooler or not) while it sits out in the open.
Additionally, consider the following things when planning for this event:
Fursuiting is encouraged but please note that we do not provide a changing area. From previous experience, it is possible that someone will bring an Easy Up structure for people to change with but this is not a guarantee. If you have such a structure, feel free to let us know
All Four-legged attendees must be on a leash.
All parked vehicles must be completely inside a designated parking space: If you need to temporarily double-park to unload, please leave someone with the vehicle.
There is NO in-and-out privileges with your parking permit: Please arrange with friends to bring in additional items if you find you need something, or consider riding a bike to the store.
We stay from park opening until park closing. As always, Please Bring Trash Bags! As large as a group as we are, we would like to make sure that the MOOP (Matter Out Of Place, aka TRASH) is properly collected and disposed of, which will keep the park officials happy with us.
After a bit of discussion with the regulars, Stego has decided to move the FurryNOM events. It will now be held on the first and third Fridays of the month. This is in response to many who responded worrying about the old time being on a Weeknight, whereas many wont have to worry so much with it being on a Weekend.
The location will remain the same for the time being, given the multitude of restaurants in the area (a Panera Bread has opened up across the street, and a Greek restaurant will be opening soon in place of the Mexican place which closed a few months back), and the fact that the outdoor seating area makes for ample room for fursuiters to join in.
With this change, the next FurryNOM will be held on March 7th, 2014 from 6pm to 9pm. Stego and Kat will be giving this new timeslot a try for the next couple of months, to see if it fits better within people’s work and school schedules. So, if you are in the Inland Empire (Upland, Rancho Cucamonga, Riverside, San Bernardino), come out and NOM!
More info about FurryNOM can be found at http://socalfurs.com/ai1ec_event/furry-nom-1st/?instance_id=
FurryNOM will go on as normal tomorrow Wed April 18th in the Upland Colonies Food Court from 6pm to 9pm! Furrs from all over the Inland Empire come and socialize; theres a number of nearby food joints to Nom from: zPizza, Carls Jr, Taco Factory, Ono hawiian BBq, Yogiyo, and Chickfil-a. Come and enjoy the springtime fuzzies! :3
Quite easy to get to By Car: 210 freeway to Campus, head south to first light (Wells Fargo is on the Corner), then make a Right. Food court is straight ahead of you, park anywhere!
Occasionally we do have fursuiters, feel free to bring yours!
I hope to see you there!
